Architecture Design Studio I

The studio aimed to push students to question architectural design conventions. Beginning with a systematic creation of a structure prior to a form-finding exercise of inhabiting the structure led to the unique design of the pipeline.

Propped against the steep terrain, the Pipeline displays striking characteristics: Pipes for circulation and habitation functions, and slabs to support external functions and frame spaces in design and environment.

The Pipeline is a single-bedroom private residence intended to cater generously to individual needs as well as interests (physical exercise and artistic exploration). It is composed of six habitable floor accessed via two vertical pipes, housing stairwells.

The residence employs the length of the pipe features to frame spaces, direct light, and enhance the interior experience. Vertical pipes feature skylights at the tops, bringing life to the tall stairwells.

Floor Plan Arrangement

The bottom floor features a gym containing a 30 meter indoor pool, multi-purpose free-weight rack and bench, and a treadmill. Above it is an outdoor seating area + self-service drink bar. Next, is a personal office, recessed in the mountainside allowing for a more secluded private experience. Above it lies the main floor with the entrance, which has a kitchen + dining room arrangement through one pipe, an outdoor terrace, as well as a seating space in another pipe to allow for maximal view exposure. Located at the very top is the bedroom floor, which also contains a generous bathroom and separate secluded studio.

Various Representations

Artistic representations feature several axonometric views depicting aspects of the project, such as its pseudo-technical nature in the exploded axonometric, the back-bone effect of the pipes, and the circulatory relationship between slabs.

The two interior perspectives depict the mode of inhabiting the pipes. The first scene is of the bedroom, placed at the top level at the end of the pipe, with shelving and furniture fitted along the side of the room. The second scene depicts the indoor seating area, secluded at the end of a pipe. Both show how the pipe features frame scenes and employ light to direct circulation.
